EP095: The Sack You Were Smothered In

The history of home aquariums can be traced back to the mid-19th century when advancements in glass-making technology made it possible to create transparent vessels suitable for holding water. The first known home aquarium was developed by English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse in the 1850s, who published a book titled "The Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea" in 1854. Gosse's creation marked the beginning of the popularization of home aquariums among Victorian enthusiasts. Initially, these early aquariums were relatively simple and small, often showcasing local freshwater species. Over time, aquarium technology improved, and the hobby became more accessible to the general public. By the early 20th century, glass tanks with better filtration and heating systems allowed for the maintenance of marine as well as freshwater ecosystems within the confines of a home. The home aquarium hobby experienced significant growth in the latter half of the 20th century, with a wide array of species and elaborate setups becoming increasingly common. Today, home aquariums are diverse, ranging from small desktop tanks to large, intricately designed systems, reflecting both the fascination with aquatic life and the advancements in aquarium technology over the years.
